On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Departments of Banking and Finance, Business Management, and Accounting at Tishk International University (TIU) successfully hosted an International Workshop titled “The Role of Corporate Governance and Stakeholders in Driving Organizational Success and Advancing Sustainable Development Goals.” The event brought together faculty, students, and industry professionals to discuss the vital role of corporate governance in shaping sustainable organizations.
The workshop commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Abubakar Karaye, Head of the Accounting, Banking and Finance Departments. The highlight of the workshop was a presentation by Professor Amon Chizema, a distinguished expert in corporate governance and sustainability from Loughborough University, England.
Professor Chizema provided deep insights into how stakeholders, from employees to customers and regulators, play a pivotal role in driving corporations to adopt sustainable practices. He explained that aligning corporate strategies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), not only ensures long-term success but also builds trust and resilience in organizations.
The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session where students and faculty had the opportunity to delve deeper into issues such as balancing profit with sustainability, overcoming challenges in stakeholder management, and real-world examples of successful governance models. The lively discussion underscored the relevance of the topic in today’s business landscape. The event also featured a tea break, where participants had the chance to network and share ideas in a more informal setting.
After the discussions, Dr. Fatih Cura, the Vice President of Admin and Finance of Tishk International University, presented a certificate to Professor Chizema, followed by a vote of thanks and closing remarks.
The Departments of Accounting, Management, and Banking and Finance extended their heartfelt gratitude to Professor Amon Chizema for his invaluable contribution and to all participants for their active engagement.
