IRD Department Pays a Visit to UNAMI on Human Rights Day

On December 10th, 2023, the International Relations and Diplomacy Department, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics at Tishk International University (TIU) paid a visit to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq at its Erbil Office, where they both celebrated the Human Rights Day, given its rich history and relevance. It was on December 10th, 1948, that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed. This year marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world’s most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10th, 1948, and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

The Head of IRD Department, Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa, led the delegation, which included the Former President of Tishk International University, Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdul Samad Salahuddin Ahmad, staff of the IRD Department, and students. Dr. Florian Razesberger, a senior Human Rights Officer, received the delegation and took time to explain the origin of UNAMI, its mission and mandate in Iraq and the relevance of the Human Rights Day. He further explained that the mandate of UNAMI is to prioritize the provision of advice, support, and assistance to the government and people of Iraq on advancing inclusive, political dialogue and national and community-level reconciliation, assisting in the electoral process, facilitating regional dialogue between Iraq and its neighbours, and promoting the protection of human rights and judicial and legal reforms.

A Q & A session followed, and certificates of appreciation were give at the end of the visit.
