IRD Department Holds Open Lecture on Human Security in Contemporary Politics
On October 19th, 2023, the International Relations and Diplomacy Department, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics (FASE) at Tishk International University (TIU) held an open lecture on “Human Security in Contemporary Politics.” The lecture began with a welcome address by the Head of IRD Department, Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa, who introduced the distinguished speaker, Dr. Salar S. Ismael from Soran University.
Dr. Ismael began by asking one of the most important questions about human security: “how can we ensure the comprehensive protection and well-being of individuals and communities in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.” This question was answered with reference to the main characteristics of human security, which include comprehensiveness, adaptation to complexity, interconnectedness, policy and governance, measurement and evaluation, and empowerment. He further stressed the fact that human security is a concept that has gained significant prominence in contemporary politics, because it reflects a shift in focus from traditional state-centric security to a broader people-centered approach. In contemporary politics, human security plays a great role in addressing various global challenges and is seen as the primary condition for human and physical development.
The Q & A session followed, where the distinguished speaker answered all the questions that were asked by participants, including TIU staff and students, especially those taking IRD 233: Security and Due Diligence and IRD 301: International Security I. Finally, a certificate of appreciation was given to the speaker by the Head of IRD Department, Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa.
