In collaboration with the Faculty of Law, the International Relations and Diplomacy Department, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics at Tishk International University, organized a National Workshop on Commemorating the Republic of Kurdistan on February 23rd, 2023. The workshop commenced with a welcome address by the moderator, Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulbasit K. Mawlood, in which he delivered an opening remark on the workshop and the significance of commemorating the Republic of Kurdistan, and introduced the two distinguished speakers, Prof. Dr. Othman Ali from Salahaddin University and Asst. Prof. Dr. Najdat Sabri from Tishk International University, respectively.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Najdat Sabri served as the first distinguished speaker and took the participants through his topic, An Analysis of the Republic of Kurdistan: National Security Perspective, where he discussed and analyzed the historical trajectory of the Republic of Kurdistan and the lessons to be learnt in order to address the Kurdish issue for the peace, stability and progress of the region. On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Othman Ali served as the second distinguished speaker and made a presentation titled, The International System and the Fall of the Republic of Kurdistan: Lessons for KRG, where he traced the history of the Republic of Kurdistan to Mahabad, which was founded in 1941, although it ended in 1946, as the Soviets pulled out of Iran in the same year. He also stated that some of the factors that caused the failure of the Republic of Kurdistan included failure to apply diplomacy effectively, manage the economy efficiently and utilize power for the public good. This, therefore, shows the need for lessons to be learnt, especially by the KRG, for the security, stability and development of the Kurdistan Region.

The two distinguished speakers shared the following recommendations:

  • Good governance through proper utilization of political power for the development and stability of KRI.
  • Improvement of diplomatic relations.
  • Creating the necessary condition for sustained economic growth and development.

A Q&A session followed, in which all the questions asked by the participants, including TIU academics, academics from other universities and students, were answered adequately. Finally, Certificates of Appreciation were issued to the two distinguished speakers and the moderator for their hard work and appreciation.
