On April 24, 2025, the International Relations and Diplomacy Department at Tishk International University successfully organized an international workshop titled, ‘How to Protect Your Own Resources and Avoid Burnout While being a “Helper” During the Refugee Crisis.’ The workshop was designed to address the psychological and emotional toll experienced by humanitarian workers, volunteers, and professionals engaged in refugee crises.
Insights and Strategies for Humanitarian Aid Workers
The workshop featured Dr. Anna Linka from the University of Szczecin, Poland, a seasoned expert on migration, refugees, and intercultural education. Dr. Linka led two insightful sessions focused on practical strategies for self-care, emotional resilience, and sustainable engagement in humanitarian work. The workshop is in line with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Asst. Prof. Dr. Basiru Musa served as the moderator, guiding the discussion and fostering a dynamic exchange between the speaker and the diverse audience of students, faculty, and field practitioners.
The workshop was attended by about 20 participants. It not only provided participants with vital knowledge and tools but also reinforced Tishk International University’s commitment to addressing real-world global challenges through education, dialogue, and international collaboration.
Key Recommendations
The following recommendations were given to help mitigate burnout and improve effectiveness in humanitarian work:
- Balance should be created while rendering humanitarian service to others.
- Stress management techniques are essential for long-term engagement.
- Governments at all levels should play a critical role in managing and regulating refugee inflows through comprehensive policies and laws.
- Global cooperation should be enhanced to ensure a coordinated and effective response to refugee crises.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa, Head of the International Relations and Diplomacy Department. He praised both the speaker and moderator for their valuable contributions and presented certificates of appreciation to recognize their efforts in making the workshop a meaningful and impactful experience.
