On December 10, 2024, coinciding with the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Relations and Diplomacy (IRD) Department at Tishk International University took part in an international conference organized by the Independent Commission for Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region-Iraq. The event, themed “Together to Promote Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region,” was held at the Erbil Rotana Hotel and ran from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Conference Highlights and Key Discussions

Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa, Head of the IRD Department, attended the conference along with ten students from the department. The program began with an opening ceremony featuring addresses by Prof. Dr. Mona Yokhna, Head of the Commission, and Mr. Rebar Ahmad, Interior Minister of the Kurdistan Region. The conference agenda was enriched by three panels that delved into critical topics:

  • Freedom of Opinion and Expression
  • Rule of Law
  • Hate Speech

Each panel included a dynamic exchange of ideas and insights, led by a diverse group of professionals, including judges, journalists, and human rights activists. This engagement underscored the IRD Department’s commitment to fostering dialogue and contributing to the advancement of human rights in the region. This event is a clear example of the department’s efforts to align with UN Sustainable Development Goal 16, which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions.
