Community Service on Women and Youth Empowerment

In collaboration with Women Empowerment Organization (WEO), the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics at Tishk International University, organised a community service activity on women and youth empowerment on 13th December 2022. The speaker, Ms. Ramsina Askar from the Prosperity Catalyst Organization, made a presentation on Women as Decision Makers in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. She discussed the main factors limiting women and youth from becoming economically and politically empowered and what can be done to address them.

The factors include the structure of the society or socio-cultural factors, the nature/situation of women, statutory or legal hindrances, economic and political obstacles, etc. In effect, the foregoing barriers have structural, socialisation and situational explanations. Some of the recommended solutions comprise societal reorientation, education, amendment of the existing laws to make them more favourable to women and youth, equal opportunities and equitable distribution of resources, and creation of a safe environment and level playing field in politics and economic management in both the public and private sectors for women and youth.

The Q&A session followed, where the participants, including TIU academics, students, and members of the public, asked questions, which were all answered by the speaker.
