On April 20, 2025, the International Relations and Diplomacy Department at Tishk International University hosted a thought-provoking international workshop titled “Migration Crisis in Europe,” which gathered scholars, experts, and students to discuss one of the most pressing global challenges of our time. The workshop aimed to provide valuable insights into the historical background of the migration crisis in Europe, the plight of migrants, and their significant contributions. Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa, Head of the International Relations and Diplomacy Department, delivered the welcome address and introduced the distinguished speaker, Prof. Fuad Jomma from the University of Szczecin, Poland. Dr. Mustafa also moderated the workshop, which aligns with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Workshop Sessions
The workshop was structured into two in-depth sessions, each addressing critical dimensions of the European migration crisis. The first session focused on the ‘Political and Humanitarian Dimensions of Migration,’ with the distinguished speaker highlighting the role of international law, human rights, and the responsibilities of both sending and receiving states. He emphasized the complex intersection between state sovereignty and human dignity in times of crisis. Prof. Jomma also shed light on the state of Kurdish migrants and their contributions, particularly in Poland, and how Polish society has created an accommodating environment for these migrants.
The second session shifted focus to ‘Socio-Economic Integration and Policy Responses,’ where the impact of migration on host societies was examined. This included an analysis of effects on labor markets, public services, and social cohesion. The speaker reviewed current European policies, proposing more humane and coordinated approaches to managing migration flows.
Key Outcomes and Recommendations
The workshop was attended by approximately 25 participants, including Tishk International University staff, students, and researchers. The event provided them with a clear understanding of the historical background of migration in Europe, the situation of Kurdish migrants, and the European policies designed to manage migration flows. The following key recommendations were proposed:
- Observance of international conventions on migrants’ rights.
- Strengthening the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other related organizations for efficient, effective, and timely service delivery.
- Initiation and implementation of right and fair immigration policies in Europe.
- Enhanced global cooperation among states, particularly among European nations.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa. He also issued a certificate of appreciation to the distinguished speaker, Prof. Fuad Jomma, and expressed his gratitude to Dr. Anna Linka for her valuable contributions as an interpreter during the workshop.
