Foreign Guest Lecture on Funding for Start-Ups

The Accounting Department at the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics (FASE) at Tishk International University (TIU) hosted an insightful foreign guest lecture on funding for start-ups on November 27th, 2023. The Head of Accounting Department Dr. Ghousia Khatoon welcomed and introduced the guest speaker to the audience. Dr. Lakshman K. Associate Professor and HOD and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the Department of Management at Jain University-CMS, SBMJEC, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, was the guest Speaker. There was a turnout of 52 participants for this event.

The main objective of the foreign guest lecture was to give attendees, including students and Staff of the Accounting Department a thorough grasp of the range of financial options accessible to start-up companies. The speaker presented a thorough overview of several start-up finance options, highlighting the range of tactics starters can use to obtain capital for their projects. He highlighted contemporary funding models, their advantages, challenges, and suitability for different business contexts. The funding includes but not limited to angel investors, venture capitalists, crowdfunding and government grants.

Specifically, the participant learned that angel investors, are typically high-net-worth individuals who contribute seed capital in exchange for equity or convertible debt, aligning their interests with the success of the start-up. While venture capitalists are institutional investors managing pooled funds, play a vital role in injecting capital into start-ups in exchange for equity. The venture capital funding process involves due diligence, negotiations, and establishing a collaborative partnership between the start-up and the investor. A crowd sourcing is a fundraising approach in which a large number of people, referred to as the “crowd,” donate modest sums of money. This alternative fundraising method makes use of the combined strength of a wide range of individuals, usually via websites devoted to crowd sourcing. Finally, government grants and subsidies offered by various levels of government support start-ups in areas of innovation and economic development.

To sum up, the speaker urged students who want to start their own business to take advantage of the funding sources. The workshop concluded with closing remarks by the Professor Dr. Ghousia Khatoon, Head Department of Accounting, Tishk International University.
