Departments of Accounting, Banking and Finance Holds its 1st Industrial Advisory Committee Meeting

On Monday, April 22nd 2024, the Departments of Accounting, Banking and Finance, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics at Tishk International University (TIU) held its first Industrial Advisory Committee meeting with a distinguished lineup of industry experts and academic leaders. Attendees of the meeting from the industry side comprised Dr. Samer Alssabagh, the CFO of Empire World, Erbil Iraq, Mr. Sirwan Barwary, Director of Deloitte Erbil Iraq, Mr. Resit Kaya, Accounting Manager of Das Food Industries, Erbil Iraq. On the other hand, attendees from TIU include: Dr. Fatih Cura, Vice President, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics, TIU, Dr. Karwan Sherwani, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Administrative and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ghousia Khatoon, Head of the Accounting, Banking, and Finance Departments, Dr. Abubakar Karaye, Lecturer of Finance, Banking, and Accounting Departments, Committee Member, as well as Dr. Hussaini Bala, Assistant Professor of Accounting, Banking, and Finance Departments.

The primary objective of the meeting was to bridge the gap between academia and industry by gathering insights from seasoned professionals in the field. Dr. Ghousia Khatoon chaired the meeting, facilitating discussions aimed at enhancing the curriculum of the Accounting Department as per industry standards. She briefed the panel of industry experts about the department, its vision, mission, objectives and the learning outcomes of the program. She strongly stressed on the areas of collaborations such as delivery of guest lectures, national and international workshops by the industry experts, industrial visits, internships and placements. Dr. Abubakar Karaye presented the Banking and Finance Department curriculum and facilitated the discussions regarding the alignment of the curriculum with finance industry demands. The course discussed at length include Financial Accounting 1 and 2 and Banking Operations.

The meeting proved to be highly fruitful, with industry experts providing invaluable recommendations for curriculum improvement. Insights garnered from Dr. Samer Alssabagh, Mr. Sirwan Barwary, and Mr. Resit Kaya shed light on the skills and knowledge required by graduates to excel in the dynamic landscape of Accounting, Banking, and Finance. The recommendations provided by industry experts will inform curriculum enhancements aimed at better preparing students for successful careers in Accounting, Banking, and Finance. Moving forward, the collaboration between academia and industry will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring the relevance and effectiveness of educational programs in meeting the evolving needs of the financial sector. The meeting concluded with appreciation and vice-presidential remarks by Dr. Fatih Cura, Vice President, Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics and vote of thanks by Dr. Karwan Sherwani, Vice-Dean Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics.
