As part of the impactful Interpersonal Dynamics and Character Building (IDCB) course at Tishk International University (TIU), a group of committed students came together to support vulnerable families affected by Thalassemia—an inherited blood disorder that requires lifelong treatment.
Conducted on May 26, 2025, their project titled “Supporting Thalassemia Families through Donations” focused on delivering financial support and raising awareness about the challenges faced by families with Thalassemia patients, particularly those struggling with the high costs of ongoing medical care.
The students began their journey with research: meeting patients, speaking with families, and consulting with staff at local hospitals treating Thalassemia. The more they learned, the more determined they became to act.
They launched a campus-wide donation campaign, collecting contributions from fellow students, faculty, and community members. In just two weeks, they raised enough money to provide financial assistance to several families who were in urgent need of support for medical expenses, transportation, and medications.
“What touched us most was the resilience of these families,” said student team member Dilan. “They go through so much every day. We just wanted to do something—anything—to show that they are not alone.”
In addition to financial aid, the students worked to raise public awareness about Thalassemia. They created informative posters and social media infographics in Kurdish and English, explaining the causes, symptoms, and importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
