In a project that blends environmental awareness with student activism, participants of the Interpersonal Dynamics and Character Building (IDCB) course at Tishk International University (TIU) launched a creative campaign titled “Life on Land.” Conducted on May 18, 2025, the initiative focused on protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable land use practices in the Kurdistan Region.
As a key part of their coursework, students researched environmental challenges affecting their communities and took active steps to educate others, clean local habitats, and plant native species to support ecological health.
The students began by exploring United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land, which addresses the need to halt biodiversity loss and protect ecosystems. Inspired by this global call to action, the students designed a project rooted in the local context of Kurdistan.
They identified nearby green spaces threatened by pollution and human activity, organized clean-up drives, and planted native saplings that support local wildlife. In collaboration with volunteers and environmental groups, they also developed educational materials to share with their peers.
“We realized how much natural beauty we have, and how easy it is to lose it if we don’t care,” said student team leader Rojin. “This project taught us that awareness leads to responsibility.”
