Internal Seminar on The Role of Feedback in Reflective Learning

On 1st December 2022, the Department of AccountingBanking & Finance, Faculty of Administrative Sciences & Economics, Tishk International University hosted an internal seminar entitled The Role of Feedback in Reflective Learning. The resource person of the seminar was Dr. Ghousia Khatoon, Professor at the Department of Accounting, Banking & Finance, TIU.

The seminar discussed reflective learning, deep learning vs surface learning, feedback & its essentials, formative vs summative assessment and the role of feedback in reflective learning. Reflective learning involves learning from past experiences and transforming surface learning into deep learning. Feedback is the evaluation of students’ performance and helps them to improve further. The provision of timely feedback plays a vital role in reflective learning. Feedback helps both tutor and student know the areas of improvement and is of great help to the instructors as it helps to adjust the teaching styles according to the student’s learning styles. The speaker suggested that the participants adopt the VARK model of learning as it helps to understand the students’ varied learning needs. She also highlighted establishing the rubrics and evaluating the student’s performance on the same basis.

The participants were enthusiastic learners and took an active part in the activities conducted by the resource person during the course of the seminar. The seminar was attended by the Dean, Mr. Karwan Sherwani, Head of the Department of AccountingBanking & FinanceDr. Waqar Ahmad, Head of the Department, International Relations & Diplomacy, Dr. Mohammed Salih, Head of the Business and Management DepartmentMr. Fayaq AliDr. Hamdi Serin, and several other professors. The resource person concluded the seminar with the Sufi Parable – The Sun and the Cave, wherein she highlighted that we need to borrow from the story and be a ray of sunshine in students’ lives.
