Research Seminar Explores the Role of ESG Engagement in Corporate Decarbonization

The Department of Accounting hosted an engaging research seminar on 31 August 2026, featuring Dr. Hussaini Bala, who presented his latest research titled “Does ESG Engagement Drive Corporate Decarbonization? Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa.”

The seminar explored the growing role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) engagement in addressing climate change and reducing corporate carbon emissions, with a particular focus on firms operating in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Bala presented the study’s key findings and highlighted how corporate ESG practices can contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable and low-carbon economy.

The event brought together faculty members and research assistants from the Department of Accounting, Banking and Finance Department, Business and Management Department, and International Relations and Diplomacy Department, creating a valuable interdisciplinary platform for academic interactions and cross fertilization of ideas among the faculty members.

The presentation generated lively and constructive discussions around corporate sustainability, ESG performance, carbon emissions, environmental responsibility, and the role of institutions and public policy in supporting corporate decarbonization. Participants also shared perspectives on how businesses and policymakers can strengthen ESG practices to address emerging environmental and climate-related challenges.

The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which participants engaged with the presenter and provided valuable academic feedback on the research.

The event reflects the Departments continued commitment to research excellence, interdisciplinary academic engagement, and knowledge sharing on emerging issues in accounting, finance, business, sustainability, and global development. The Department also places strong emphasis on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in alignment with the University’s commitment to integrating the SDGs into its academic, research, and community activities.
