International Workshop on Corporate Governance and Sustainable Development Goals
On Tuesday, 26th November 2024, the Departments of Accounting, with collaboration of Business Management, and Banking and Finance departments successfully hosted an International Workshop titled “The Role of Corporate Governance and Stakeholders in Driving Organizational Success and Advancing Sustainable Development Goals.” The event brought together faculty, students, and industry professional to discuss the vital role of corporate governance in shaping sustainable organizations. The workshop commenced with an opening remarks by Dr. Abubakar Karaye the Head of Accounting, Banking and Finance Departments.
The highlight of the workshop was the presentation by Professor Amon Chizema, a distinguished expert in corporate governance and sustainability from Loughborough University, England. In his engaging session, Professor Chizema provided deep insights into how stakeholders play a pivotal role in driving corporations to adopt sustainable practices. He explained that stakeholders; ranging from employees to customers and regulators are increasingly demanding accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct from corporations.
He further illustrated how aligning corporate strategies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), not only ensures long-term success but also builds trust and resilience in organizations.
The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session, where students and faculty had the opportunity to delve deeper into issues such as balancing profit with sustainability, overcoming challenges in stakeholder management, and real-world examples of successful governance models. The lively discussion underscored the relevance of the topic in today’s business landscape. The event also featured a tea break, where participants had the chance to network and share ideas in a more informal setting.
After the discussions, Dr. Fatih Cura, the vice president Admin and Finance of Tishk International University presented certificate to Professor Chizema, followed by vote of thanks and closing remarks.
