Industry Guest Lecture by Deloitte
The Accounting Department at Tishk International University recently organized an enlightening Industry Guest Lecture titled ‘Overview of auditing and audit practice in Kurdistan Region’. The guest lecture was held on 25th February 2024. The objective of the guest lecture is to enhance students and other participants’ understanding on the role and application of auditing theories into practice. Auditing is an independent examination of financial statements and expression of professional opinion on the true and fair view of financial affairs of an entity.
The program commenced at 10.00 am with an opening remark by Assistant Professor Dr. Hussaini Bala who also introduced the guest speakers Mr. Sirwan Barwary and Mustafa Omar both from Deloitte, one of the BIG 4 prestigious auditing firms in the world. Mr. Sirwan is currently the country director of Deloitte, Iraq while Mr. Mustafa Omar is an assurance manager with Deloitte, Iraq.
The presenters extensively discussed the role and importance of auditing practice and paradigm shift in the auditing practice. The discussion centered around the internal control, audit sampling and signing of auditing assignment and system-based auditing. The presenters also shared experience and challenges faced by auditing. At the second session presenters urged Students to use the opportunity to network and engage with industry experts and practitioners. The networking will foster mentorship and building relationship that can facilitate easy transition from academia to auditing profession. They also urged the students to enroll themselves in the Certified Public Accountant examination (CPA) to gain access to global job opportunities.
The event provides a platform for Students to understand that the audit practice plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the interests of stakeholders, promoting financial transparency, enhancing risk management, detecting, and preventing fraud, improving operational efficiency, and fostering accountability and good governance within organizations. By maintaining professional standards of integrity, independence, and objectivity, auditors contribute to the stability, credibility, and sustainability of the financial reporting.
After the presentation, the Head of Accounting Department, Prof. Dr. Ghousia Khatoon, offered closing remarks and thanked the presenters for honoring the department’s invitation despite their
tight schedule being auditors of the global auditing firm. The program was concluded with presentation of mementoes and certificates to the presenters and organizing committee for their valuable contributions by the Vice Dean of Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics, Mr. Karwan Sharwani.
