Workshop: Protect Yourself from Doing Crime (Part 2)

In collaboration with the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics, Business and Management Department, the Director of Erbil Community held a second workshop on 12th December 2022 in response to requests by our students and the popularity of the previous seminar conducted on drugs. The workshop discussed the dangers of social media, imposter accounts and cybercrime. He explained how someone could act like a girl when they are a man or pretend to be in their 20s when they are 50 years old. These people do that to trick someone with the help of social engineering to give away information about themselves that they otherwise wouldn’t. The Director further explained how they use the information to blackmail their victims. He highlighted the importance of only accepting people as friends on social media if they are personally identified and are sure of their good intentions.

It is also essential to be careful with pictures, states the Director of Erbil Community. It is very easy nowadays to get hacked, it can be as fast as clicking on one link that someone sent, and suddenly, they have access to one’s entire gallery and chat logs. That is why all sensitive pictures must be removed from personal phones and laptops or saved on external hard drives. The presenter also explained why pictures sent to friends or family should be deleted from chat history so that if social media accounts are compromised, those pictures will not be available to the intruder.

The Director of Erbil Community then concluded the event by sharing real-life examples of what had happened before and disclosed cases where people ended their life due to social engineering and blackmail.
